Amazing museum. Lot of classic and modern Australian Aboriginal art.I spent there few hours because they have lot of very interesting expositions that I wanted to see on detail. People at the museum are very professional and polite and always available to help you.Very tidy and clean museum.It's for free (unless specific temporary expositions) and it's a must if you are visiting Melbourne
The Potter Gallery has most major Australian artists on display, from Nolan to Smart. The collections are rotated frequently, allowing many revisits. Contemporary artists can occasionally be confronting, and exhibitions are a mixed bag, and should be considered based on your tastes. The gallery itself is spacious, well lit, and has plenty of seating if your feet and or hips get a bit tired. There is also a cafe on the top floor, plus a gift shop on the ground floor. Highlyrecommended, and it's free
The exhibition was nothing to write home about. The curator cum warden was eagerly officious in instructing me NOT to open a drawer. When challenged about where is the sign his catch-all answer was "it's a condition of entry". There were no signs saying don't touch and no condition of entry T&C were available at reception. If you're going to justify your existence make sure you know what you're talking about, have the facts to hand - and attend a customer services trading module. Don't bother with this place.
Terrific Australian Art Gallery in Federation Square. Some wonderful examples of indigenous art - brilliant piece by Clifford Possum - worth the visit just to see it.Also loved the early colonial painters and the early Australian impressionists.Only had a couple of hours here sadly. Make sure you allow a good half day.
A must to go see this Ian Potter Centre for contemporary Australian art. An impressive permanent collection and regular impressive exhibitions. Very impressive designed building and gallery spaces that represent individual artists, and Australian art in general, exceptionally well. If you can visit the Ian Potter Centre as well as the main National Gallery of Victoria location 10 minutes walk away, you're doing your Melbourne visit right.
